Heroes, villains and hotel development - New Zealand 2005 to 2015
Last modified: 2018-07-02
Abstract
The provision of sufficient accommodation of an acceptable quality has always been a major constraint on the development of New Zealand tourism. This presentation gives a brief history of the evolution of hotel development before examining two specific developers in the context of the Global Financial Crisis. The image of the two developers changed drastically over the period particularly due to the involvement of finance companies that did not survive the economic shake out. The hotels under development in 2009 when the Global Financial Crisis struck did eventually emerge as successful businesses.
Drawing on newspaper reporting, this presentation investigates the individuals and companies involved in hotel development. It also considers if the structure of New Zealand's hotel and financial markets imposes additional challenges for an industry notorious for a boom and bust approach to delivering new accommodation supply to meet anticipated demand.
Conference registration is required in order to view papers.
