Te Whare Rangahau (A Casa da Pesquisa): Designing a methodological framework for an artistic inquiry into Māori gender, identity and performance (Projetando uma estrutura metodológica para uma investigação artística sobre gênero, identidade e desempenho m

Resumo

Este artigo considera a estrutura metodológica construída para a tese de doutorado Takatāpui Beyond Marginalisation: Exploring Māori Gender, Identity and Performance (Explorando o gênero, a identidade e o desempenho maori). Nessa investigação artística orientada pela prática, o pesquisador adotou uma abordagem criticamente iterativa em que "as perguntas de pesquisa eram inicialmente exploratórias e reflexivas, servindo para criar um diálogo interno entre o praticante e a criação" (Tavares & Ings, 2018, p. 20). A pergunta formativa que embasou a tese foi:

 

Como uma reconsideração artística da diferenciação de papéis de gênero pode dar uma voz única à identidade takatāpui tāne?1

 

A pesquisa buscou iluminar um contexto experiencial e, em seguida, gerar artefatos visuais e performáticos em que o princípio de irarere dentro da identidade de gênero e da orientação sexual pudesse encontrar um lugar proposital para se posicionar dentro do te ao Māori (a visão de mundo Māori).2

 

Emanando de um paradigma Kaupapa Māori, o estudo empregou a metáfora metodológica do Te Whare Rangahau, um espaço de pesquisa que é povoado por métodos que incluem karakia (encantamento), entrevistas kanohi ki te kanohi (face a face), experimentação iterativa, pakiwaitara (investigação poética), fotografia e coreografia. Na tese, Te Whare Rangahau integrou várias características da estrutura Pūrākau de Robert Pouwhare (2020) para investigação artística conduzida pela prática - especificamente sua observação de que, em muitas pesquisas artísticas maori, por meio de mahi (prática) e investigação heurística, o pesquisador pode extrair o sustento tanto do reino de Te Kura Huna (o que é invisível, genealógico, esotérico ou tácito) quanto de Te Kura Tūrama - (o que é explícito e visto). Dentro da epistemologia maori, uma dinâmica de mahi (prática) extrai nutrientes desses reinos, sintetizando e conectando elementos na geração de resultados artísticos performativos e baseados em impressões.

Tangaroa Paora, Auckland University of Technology

Tangaroa Paora is of Muriwhenua descent. He holds a Master’s degree in Māori Development (First Class Hons) and his PhD is due for submission in August 2023. His research is primarily concerned with gender role differentiation and its impact on forms of Māori performance. Between 2020-2023 he was co-president of Tītahi ki Tua (the AUT Māori Students Association), Ahakoa Te Aha, and the Auckland Pride Māori Advisory Board. He is currently employed as a lecturer in Māori studies, teaching language and development.
